Breakfast Series
Students as Partners in the Co-design of
Bespoke Digital Tools for Education
Presented by Professor Michelle Spencer and
Professor Oliver Jones RMIT University
Higher education providers are increasingly focused on providing industry-partnered learning opportunities for their students to enhance employability and career outcomes. However, it is often difficult to find sufficient industry projects. In this presentation we discuss a multi-disciplinary, student-centred partnership model that we successfully developed over the past ten years to provide work-integrated learning projects for students and at the same time create useful digital educational tools. In this model, academics do not ‘act as’ the industry partner; they are the industry partner, working with teams of students from different disciplines, in a work-integrated learning environment. The tools, products, or artefacts created through the partnership are used by educators in their teaching, while also being used by the students as part of their portfolio to demonstrate their skills when applying for jobs.
